The Story

This listing is for the 1825 British Colonies Half Penny Copper Trade Token. Struck during the pre-Confederation era of Canada, these private merchant tokens were widely circulated across the colonies to alleviate severe shortages of official crown coinage and support regional commerce. The obverse side of this 1825 token features a left-facing bust profile traditionally meant to represent British nobility or George IV, surrounded by the Latin inscription "BRITISH COLONIES". The reverse side depicts a personified figure of Commerce seated on a commercial bale of goods while holding a small branch or olive sprig. This reverse scene is tightly encircled by the clear, block-lettered slogan "TO FACILITATE TRADE" with the year 1825 stamped directly at the bottom base. Great Find!!
