The Story

This listing is for the photographed 1937 1 Rentenmark German banknote. Issued in Berlin on January 30th, 1937. Issued as an emergency transitional form of currency during times of hyperinflation within Germany. This note has an 8-digit serial number, differentiating it from other issues. Great Condition, minimal folds and signs of wear. Interesting piece of history and a must have for any collection! P#173b (Pick Number 173b).

The Rentenmark was established on October 15, 1923, by the Rentenbank, a new state bank founded to issue it. Unlike the Reichsmark, the Rentenmark was backed not by gold but by land and industrial assets, specifically mortgages on German agriculture and industry. This gave it a tangible value base, providing the economy with much-needed stability. The initial issuance of Rentenmarks successfully curbed hyperinflation, restoring public confidence. Rentenmark banknotes were widely circulated, and their value was fixed at a rate of 1 Rentenmark to 1 trillion Reichsmarks. The Rentenmark continued in circulation until 1924 when a new Reichsmark, based on gold value, was introduced as the official currency. However, the Rentenmark remained a parallel currency until 1948, when both it and the Reichsmark were replaced by the Deutsche Mark as part of post-WWII currency reform.
