This Germanic tribe migrated to Northern Africa in the fifth century A.D. and occupied Carthage for nearly 100 years. Their sacking of Rome earned them such a rotten reputation that their name has survived all these centuries with a meaning along the lines of: "Malicious destroyers of property who would be caned on sight in Singapore." The coins were found in Northern Africa and were struck by the Vandals in imitation of Roman coins of the time.
