The design has many components, all with different intertwining meanings. The heart, crown, and hands represent love, loyalty and friendship respectively. The origins of the Claddagh design are shrouded in mystery, as there is no concrete truth to the tale of its creation. Many believe the legend that a fisherman by the name of Richard Joyce created the ring in the late 17th century after he escaped servitude under pirates and married his love from his home village. Their wedding bands were said to be the first claddagh rings, representing their love and devotion for one another.
