The Reed & Barton Company was originally founded in 1824 under the name Babbit & Crossman, but shortly after was purchased and renamed after the new owners. The company was founded and primarily manufactured from Taunton, Massachusetts for the duration of their operations. The company played a key role in the Civil War, as they were responsible for the production of many weapons for the Union Army. The company began producing an annual series of Christmas Cross sterling silver ornaments in 1970, which are still being made today. In 2015 the company filed for bankruptcy, with their operating assets being put to auction and sold to the Lenox Company, who took over the production of the annual Sterling Christmas Ornaments.
